The "loud" Evangelicals

I thought about this video during our last class when we were all discussing about the Evangelical right and why they got everyone's attention. The consensus was because they were the loudest and they drowned everyone else out.  I believe Ron Paul (and his supporters) is more than adequately loud but the media seems to want nothing more than to drown this guy out. Is he sillier than Michelle Bachmann? I think not, but everyone whose not a Ron Paul fan seems to treat him like a mental patient. The media is taking Michelle Bachmann more seriously than him, a 12 term congressman (surely the basis of being reelected alone should serve some merit?).

And no, I don't believe the Christian right (all denominations) have people's attention because they are loud. Muslim radicals are just as loud, not that I would even put the two on the same level. I think more people lean to the right than we think, whether they want to admit it or not.

  1. I like the drawing of comparisons between Christian right denominations and Muslims and Ron Paul as far as the "loudness" of their words and actions. I want to make the distinction, though, that the reason I think evangelical interest groups and Bachmann/Perry supporters are "loud" is not because of how much their ideas are represented (which can be equal to a number of other sects), but because of how strongly. In my opinion, the reason they get so much attention can be tied back to our reading about how Christian groups want to see their own morals instilled in the American way of doing things. The meaning of being evangelical is spreading the word of God, and not passively just by representing one's own religion, but actively by trying to convert people or just to see the goodness of the Christian way. I think this is what sets the new, strong Christians apart from Muslims, for example, because Muslims have not built up the resources, foothold, or determination to start trying to convert people through propaganda of their beliefs like the Christian Right. So while they are loud and very present, they are not attempting to have an influence on the political culture of America.

  2. Thanks for the thoughtful comment! I just want to point out that I didn't say that the Muslims were loud, I said that the radical Muslims were just as loud, if not louder, than the Evangelical Christians. And yes, the radical Muslims very much want to change the political culture of America. Here is one of many examples of how they did that (note i say did, not tried to do. They won in this case):
